IDSense: A Human Object Interaction Detection System Based on Passive UHF RFID
Link to publication page: http://www.disneyresearch.com/publication/idsense-a-human-object-interaction-detection-system-based-on-passive-uhf-rfid/
In order to enable unobtrusive human object interaction detection, we propose a minimalistic approach to instrumenting everyday objects with passive (i.e. battery-free) UHF RFID tags. By measuring the changes in the physical layer of the communication channel between the RFID tag and reader (such as RSSI, RF phase, and read rate) we are able to...

RFID Shakables: Pairing Radio-Frequency Identification Tags with the Help of Gesture Recognition
Link to project page and press release: http://www.disneyresearch.com/project/rfid-shakables-pairing-radio-frequency-identification-tags-with-the-help-of-gesture-recognition/
Networked devices such as toys, sensors, and home appliances sometimes require objects to be connected and aware of each other, to be ``friends'' as it were. A novel technology, RFID Shakables, developed by Disney Research in collaboration across their Pittsburgh and Zurich Labs, allows for creating easy and secure...

RapID: A Framework for Fabricating Low-Latency Interactive Objects with RFID Tags
RFID tags can be used to add inexpensive, wireless, batteryless sensing to objects. However, quickly and accurately estimating the state of an RFID tag is difficult. In this work, we show how to achieve low-latency manipulation and movement sensing with off-the-shelf RFID tags and readers. Our approach couples a probabilistic filtering layer with a monte-carlo-sampling-based interaction layer, preserving uncertainty in tag reads until they can be resolved in the context of interactions. This...
